my father

I have come to a realization that going to heaven has no short cuts. The key is to undergo a painful process of sacrifice. The first step is being a servant. Its not being a slave, nor its not being employed as a domestic helper. Its being a servant to your own family, your parents, your children, your relatives, even to your friends, to people you don’t even know.

My ultimate example is my very own father. He died fulfilled, happy and contented. How? Practically having nothing. He has nothing, not any of the material things in this world. But he did everything for his family. Did everything for his wife, his children to his children’s children. Even did everything to his own brothers and sisters and to the brothers and sisters of his wife. He also did everything to people he does not have relations with, like his friends and most of all to strangers. How? I will site an example of what happened before his death. It was the Christmas of last year, 2008. An employee of where I work for gave boxes of goodies, which I really have no idea how to dispose of. So I asked my father, him being a good salesman, can help me to dispose all of the goodies and turn them into cash. My father just kept silent and blurted out “can I just have these goodies?” I have assumed that he will sell them and buy himself new clothes but to my surprise, just learned from mom that he gave every goody to total strangers. To street children, to scavengers that collects garbage in front of their home, to the people who live in shanties beside their apartment, to the church personnel near their place. I said to myself OMG my father is really going to heaven.

Not all person can do what he did. But for him it was very simple. It came out natural for him. Its part of his system to give and expect nothing in return. My father is not a saint, to us he was just a simple man, but in the eyes of God he is one great servant.
